Grammatical Cohesion in Discourse Translation: A Case Study of The Old Man and the Sea Translated by Wu Lao

Abstract

Discourse is used as the basic translation unit in most literary translations. Discourse translation should pay more attention to textual cohesion. Cohesion refers to that the parts of one paragraph are connected grammatically or lexically. This connection may exist between different sentences or several parts of a sentence. Cohesion is an important feature of discourses and the core of discourse research. This paper will take Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea and Mr. Wu Lao's translation as examples to show the concrete embodiment and application of grammatical cohesion in literary translation.
