A Study on Cultural Differences in Chinese and English Proverbs

Abstract

Proverbs are the crystallization of language and an important carrier of culture. Because of the differences in geography, religion, philosophy, customs and values, there are significant differences between Chinese and English proverbs. These differences are inevitably related to the development history of the two cultures, the differences in social structure, and the differences in religious and philosophical traditions. This paper systematically sorts out the differences between the two languages, analyzes the reasons for the differences, and explores how to promote the development of cross-cultural communication and improve translation practice and English learning. In the study, it is found that Chinese proverbs emphasize collectivism, modesty and righteousness, while English proverbs emphasize individualism, confidence and practicality. The fundamental reason for the differences between the two is that the two cultures have been developing in different directions. Understanding the differences between the two languages can avoid cultural misunderstandings and enhance cross-cultural communication ability.
