Stoicism in Schools?: A Review of Stoic Applications in Education

Abstract

A systematic literature review is conducted to uncover trends in past research on Stoic applications to problems in education. It is found that certain Stoic concepts, such as cosmopolitanism and the dichotomy of control, have been popular entry points to the Stoic philosophy for educators in various disciplines. All classroom or curriculum applications target emotions in some way. Few of the reviewed works were found to be empirical and a major takeaway is the need for more scientific research on the effects of Stoic practices as implemented in schools and classrooms.
